Our Mission

The mission of the Hospice Department of the Murray-Calloway County Hospital is to keep hope alive:

For the terminally ill persons by enabling them to live each day with alleviation of pain and continuation of optimal alertness, surrounded by family and friends.

For the families of terminally ill persons by providing them support / helping services, consultation and coordination of care.

For the community by providing education about the hospice philosophy of death, dying and care of the terminally ill person / family.

MCCH Hospice Staff Members

Hospice believes that death is a normal part of life, therefore, Hospice does not hasten nor postpone death. Hospice exists in the hope and belief that through appropriate care and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and families may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them.

In order to qualify for Hospice services, a person must be diagnosed with a terminal illness and must agree to comfort treatment instead of curative measures. Also, the patient's physician must certify that the patient might have 6 months or less to live, if the disease should progress normally.

Our History

The Murray Hospital Hospice was the first hospital-based hospice in the state of Kentucky to apply for and receive a Certificate of Need (CON) required to operate this type of service. It was approved on November 19, 1980. All of the initial staff were volunteer workers as there was no reimbursement at this time from Medicare or other providers.

On January 15, 1981, this hospice admitted its first patient to Hospice services. Through the years since, this hospice has cared for many patients and their families and was under the umbrella of the hospital Home Care department. In 2015, the Hospice department became its own entity.

Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House

As a part of the transition away from the Home Care department, construction of the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House started in the summer of 2014.  After months of hard work and continued fundraising through generous community donors, the facility celebrated its opening in November of 2016.
