MURRAY, KY – Murray-Calloway County Hospital offers a comprehensive inpatient treatment program through its Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit, providing specialized care for older adults experiencing behavioral and mental health concerns.

Designed for patients age 55 and older, the program focuses on individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. The multidisciplinary team includes a psychiatrist, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, activity therapist, social worker, mental health nurses and technicians who work together to provide compassionate, patient-centered care.

The Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit serves individuals whose primary diagnosis is psychiatric and who may be experiencing severe depression, anxiety disorders, behavioral changes, combativeness, agitation or symptoms associated with dementia. Participation in the program is voluntary.

The unit includes several features designed to support both treatment and comfort, including a nurses’ station, recreational therapy room, group and community dining area, and quiet room. Through a combination of medical care, therapeutic activities and emotional support, Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit is committed to helping patients achieve greater stability, independence, and overall well-being. Director Brittany Overbey stated, “Data shows that 96% of our patients are “better” after treatment based on the Psychogeriatric Dependency Rating Scale (PDRS), which we use to assess patient symptoms.” PDRS is a validated nurse-administered tool designed to assess elderly patients with mental illnesses, focusing on orientation, behavior, and physical capacity.
